Maruti Wagon R

Maruti Wagon R: When you consider sensible family hatchbacks in India, it’s difficult for not think of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. The game has been in existence for a bit over twenty years now and even with a flood of new contenders, it still remains standing.

Whether you’re purchasing your first car or seeking after something convenient to live with, the Wagon R is usually in the consideration set – and for good reason.

Now with an update, Maruti has added even more features, improved the engine and made this tall-boy even more attractive. But is it the budget hatchback of choice in 2025? Let’s take a closer look.

Maruti Wagon R Design: Boxy but Bold

Looks The Wagon R has always been about substance over style, and that’s absolutely fine. If it lacks in curves, it more than compensates for in substantive utility. That upright posture, high waist and flat roof line are there for more than just show.

And it does so in a configuration that gives the most room in the cabin, making it seem larger than it is.

In recent additions there are now more dual-tone colour options, a lightly revised grill, and fresh set of alloy wheel for top-end versions. It still is very much Wagon R, just a bit more stylish now.

Inside and Space: Plenty of Space, without Being a Pain in the Ass

One step inside, and you’re struck by the great head room, not to mention the excellent view out. Thanks to its tall-boy stance, getting in and out is as easy as pie – which would be a boon for those ageing family members who doze off inside.

The dash is basic and straightforward, with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system available on higher models, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

What’s most notable is the legroom and shoulder space, front and rear. The rear bench is wide enough to seat three, and the flat floor isn’t a hindrance either.

You also get 341 litres of boot space, which is a lot of luggage space, more than you might at this price expect from a hatchback.

Performance: Your Style, Your Choice

The Wagon R is available with two petrol engines from Maruti:

1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol (67 PS, 89 Nm) Transmission:(protocol based/on request) 5-speed Manual/ Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) OR 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel (99 PS, 215 Nm) Transmission:5-speed Manual (protocol based).

1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol with 89PS-113Nm

Both engines are optimised for fuel efficiency and city driving, however the 1.2L feels more sprightly and performs better on the open road. You can opt for the 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox on both engine options.

For people looking to reduce running costs, there is also a CNG option with the 1.0L engine. It gives up some power, but compensates you with awfully low fuel bills.

How It Rides and Drives

The Wagon R is more about comfort than corners. It has a soft suspension that deals nicely with bumps, and light steering that makes moving around town a breeze. The car feels compact in tight situations, great for city traffic and small roadways.

It’s not the most planted car at high speeds, especially in crosswinds. But then, it’s not exactly designed to be The Ultimate Highway Cruiser™ anyway. It is a commuter’s best friend, not a performance hatch.

Features and Safety: Bare Minimums Met

You get most of the essentials—touchscreen infotainment, steering mounted switches, power windows and rear parking sensors. Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, hill hold on the AMT guise, and ESP are offered in higher trims for additional safety.

But the Global NCAP crash rating is just average and that may be worrying for safety-conscious buyers.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Very good head and leg room runners are excellent pickups headroom, supportive Excellent headerlnm cm and leg room.
Petrol and CNG options are fuel efficient
Easy to drive in city traffic
Spacious boot for a hatchback
Maruti’s mass service network and low maintenance cost
AMT option adds convenience

Cons:

Not everyone likes a boxy look
Doesn’t feel too secure at high speed
Why we picked the Hyundai Sonata: Arguably, the Hyundai Sonata doesn’t speak to my personal demographic.
The lower trims miss out on a rear camera
Interiors look a bit plain

Maruti Wagon R Final Verdict

The Wagon is an unpretentious car. It’s not sexy, it’s not sporty. — but it is very practical, reliable and efficient.

For families, first-timers or anyone who wants a no-frills city car, the Wagon R is still among the very best choices under ₹8 lakh.
